I have an abundance of poppies that have gone to seed and was wondering if it is safe to eat them e.g. in my bread dough or are the poppy seeds usually sold in the shops slightly different?

  1. Hi, yes you can, they will grow in a seed pod and you probably can. But check with someone who is a PROFESSIONAL gardener. But it would be better to buy from the shops.

    Hope this helps

  2. isn't poppy illegal? sorry maybe it is in the country i live in

  3. Yes you can,if you haven't used any chemical fertilizer that is.

  4. You can use the poppy seeds from your garden for baking.

Here's an interesting story about eating poppy seeds:

"Giant red poppy flowers grow all over the countryside then and now. The children enjoyed eating the poppy seeds and the women used them as well as old coffee grounds or whatever they could find to make cakes for special occasions."

The  Family & Consumer Sciences Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Community Nutrition Education Programs answers the question in this way:

    Q. "Are poppy seeds for baking the same as those grown in the garden?"

Answer: "Both opiate and non-opiate poppy seeds are used in cooking, but the non-opiate seeds are more common."

If you eat poppy seed products, even the non-opiate seeds will show a false positive reading on drug tests. "the safest way to avoid a false positive reading is to resist those tempting poppy-seed treats in the days leading up to a drug test."

Forums on using poppy seeds from the garden.

"For those of you who have only tasted store-bought poppy seeds -- you haven't lived. There is nothing in the world that compares to plucking a ripe poppy fruit, pouring the fresh poppy seeds into the palm of your hand, and gobbling them up. Months old poppy seeds found in stores -- their oils have undergone a change in character."
