  1. I would not get a used part.  Cost is in the $150 range

  2. New fuel pumps can be quite pricey and about 200 bucks or more and I'd not suggest installing a used one unless you're doing it yourself and don't mind redoing it in future.Basically it can run you anywhere from 90 Min's to 4 hrs of labour at anywhere from 60 to over 90 bucks an hr.

One of the best things to do in deciding on the shop is finding a family run small town shop that specializes in gas tanks etc.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way call around to the assorted part outlets and dealership , plus check different shops for price quotes but if you've already a mechanic you find reliable then go with them or keep checking around, plus be sure they change the fuel filter at same time.Gas filters can be bought even at walmarts for 12 bucks up to over 25 bucks and can be replaced within 10 to 20 Min's on average.

  3. I had to put a fuel pump on my Cavalier a few months ago.  The fuel pump module was around $250 at autozone.  I called my favorite mechanic in town (not the Chevy dealer), and labor would have cost me another $250 or so.  I was short on cash, so I did the job myself.  It was a big PITA to drop the gas tank and switch out the pump in my driveway, but I did it.  If I had the money, I would have gladly paid the mechanic to do it.  In short, you should be able to get this done for about $500 at an independent mechanic.  I would push my cavalier off into the river before I would pay what the dealers charge for this repair.

Your fuel pump is $257.99 at autozone.  Don't forget to change your fuel filter as well.

  4. Yes .....for a certified mechanic between &700 to $1100..Depending on where you live the cost of living etc..Make sure you know your mechanic... Anything over $1100 your getting ripped..Unfortunately if you had a friend like me with a NASCAR garage t would be $150 and a half case of beer...and a sataurday.....Cheers good luck

  5. your fuel pump is one of two on the 98 cavalier,

fuel pump new one is $80.oo and the other is $145.oo

labor from most ASE certified shops will chrage you                            $300.oo to $500.oo

parts and labor should cost you no more then $700.oo

from an ASE certified shop for that car.

only because you have to remove the gas tank to do this job, this job is not just replace the fuel pump. its disconnet the full tube and vent tube, wires for the fuel pump and fuel gage and disconnet both the feed and return fuel lines and the EGR vent line, then replace the fuel pump, and put it all back together again, just so you under stand why it cost so much for the labor.

the dealer will and dose cost you more for labor, and the dealer is going to use dealer parts, the parts will cost you more as well.

  6. I paided $1.100 for a fuel pump module for my 2003 chevy cavalier two weeks ago through a chevy dealer.I nearly passed out when they told me $1.100 over the phone. The good part is its factory and now the part and labor is covered with a lifetime factory warranty. This is one major reason the next car I buy wont be a chevrolet.Best of luck.
