When canned food leaks, several bad things are possible:  it can spoil (and then customers return it and you lose business and money), it can become infected with poisonous microorganisms (and then customers sue you and it's even worse for business), or it can make a mess on the other cans that were shipped with it (and then the stores buying the food from you return it, again causing business headaches).

    The function of leak detection is to detect leaks in the canned food your factory is producing.

    The advantage is that by detecting leaks, you can improve your business by avoiding the problems I mention above.

    The disadvantage is that it costs money and slows production to implement leak detection.  (But you make up for these with increased customer loyalty and business.)
