  1. Metals that react with oxygen produce oxides as their products.

    Metal: Sodium

Observation: Burns quickly with a bright yellow flame.

Order of reactivity: 1st - most reactive.

Product: Na20, sodium peroxide - a yellow powder.

    Metal: Magnesium

Observation: Burns with a brilliant white flame

    Order of reactivity: 2nd.

Product: MgO, magnesium oxide - a white ash.

    Metal: Iron

Observation: Does not burn. Hot metal glows in oxygen and gives off yellow sparks.

    Order of reactivity: 3rd.

Product: Fe203, iron oxide – an orange powder.

    Metal: Copper

Observation: Does not burn. Metal eventually coats with a black layer.

Order of reactivity: 4th - least reactive.

Product: CuO, copper oxide - a black powder.

Of course, other metals react with oxygen, some more than sodium, for example, potassium. Others, such as gold, do not react at all.

    Reaction of metals with water

    Metal: Potassium

Observation: Violent reaction with cold water. Floats and catches fire.

Order of reactivity: 1st - most reactive.

Product: Potassium hydroxide, KOH and hydrogen gas.

    Metal: Sodium

Observation: Very vigorous reaction with cold water. Floats. Can be lit with a lighted splint.

    Order of reactivity: 2nd.

Product: Sodium hydroxide, NaOH and hydrogen gas.

    Metal: Calcium

Observation: Less vigorous with cold water.

    Order of reactivity: 3rd

Product: Calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2 and hydrogen gas.

    Metal: Magnesium

Observation: Very slow with cold water, but vigorous with steam.

    Order of reactivity: 4th.

Product: Magnesium oxide, MgO and hydrogen gas.

    Metal: Zinc

    Observation: Quite slow with steam.

    Order of reactivity: 5th

Product: Zinc oxide, ZnO and hydrogen gas.

    Metal: Iron

    Observation: Slow with steam.

    Order of reactivity: 6th.

Product: Iron oxide, Fe203 and hydrogen gas.

    Metal: Copper

    Observation: No reaction with steam.

Order of reactivity: 7th - least reactive.

    Product: No reaction.

    Reaction of metals with acid

    Metal: Magnesium

Observation: Vigorously reacts with a stream of gas evolving.

Order of reactivity: 1st - most reactive.

Product: Magnesium chloride, MgCl2 and hydrogen gas.

    Metal: Zinc

Observation: Quite slow reaction with a steady stream of gas evolving.

    Order of reactivity: 2nd.

Product: Zinc chloride, ZnCl2 and hydrogen gas.

    Metal: Iron

Observation: Slow reaction with a gentle stream of gas evolving.

    Order of reactivity: 3rd.

Product: Iron chloride, FeCl2 and hydrogen gas.

    Metal: Lead

Observation: Very slow and acid must be concentrated.

    Order of reactivity: 4th.

Product: Lead chloride, PbCl2 and hydrogen gas.

    Metal: Copper

    Observation: No reaction.

Order of reactivity: 5th - least reactive.

    Product: No reaction.
