Question:

Can you explain my Pionus' creepy back and forth behavior? It's not aggressive.?

I have a blue-headed Pionus. She's very sweet, she might even be a he, I haven't checked yet.

There are random occassions where she/he will completely spead out her tail feathers, her feathers on her head will stand up on its ends, she opens her eyes wide, her mouth gets slightly open, and she slowly moves back and forth in a creepy pace.

It doesn't matter if I approach her or call her or ignore her, she doesn't stop, and it doesn't matter what's in her way, she'll keep pacing.

What kind of behvior is this? I can't find anything like it online. Some people claim their birds do it when they're aggressive, but she does not express aggressive behavior, in fact, she sometimes does it when she's being given attention.

Perhaps a mating dance? She does try to regurgitate her food often to feed me so I think she claims me as her mate =).

Help please!

Thanks for your answers!!

  1. That is called "The Pionus Strut"  I have Maximilian Pionus and she does that an looks hilarious. All puffed up and with the white eye ring, she looks really wild and tough when she stalks back and forth across the top of the cage. She really makes me laugh.  Regurgitating her food is because she loves you and wants to feed  you "yuk". I have had better offers of food.  I read this in a bird magazine or a bird book. Unfortunately I can't remember what the name was. You might try just "Pionus Strut"

  2. I don't have pionus but my first thought was "mating".
