Can you explain nano techonology in laymans terms?

What is it? How can it be used? Why haven't we moved faster on this? Are there some good sites that will provide meaningful info and not just gobbledegook?

Microscopic robots with simple machines for mobility and for manipulating their surroundings. Each little bot has enough intelligence to communicate with others of its kind. They can form a collective intelligence like a hive mentality. Some can secrete specific chemicals. They are designed to perform tasks beneficial to mankind, but it's easy to think up nightmare scenarios where they enslave us.

Imagine a thousand little machines that have been designed to eat cancer cells. They are microscopic in size and are injected into the blood stream, move to the cancer and eliminate it. There are thousands of applications for Nanites but sifting through the gobbly **** is hard. Just use the normal channels and you will eventually bump into a site that uses people friendly language.
