Can you explain the modern social dynamic?

Question

Is there a simple way to explain the function of individuals with relation others and the soceity at large. A way to explain how individuals change soceity and how society changes individuals, preferably in the form of a simple analogue or a mathimatical like equation.

Please focus if possible on childhood through young adulthood, the way society acts and reacts to these individuals and the way that they react in return.

It seems to me that there is social recognition in this nation that represents a backlash as a response to the failure of the family where both parents work, and there is no parent available for the children to guide them.  Children need a parent to be there for them, especially after school.  It will be quite a while before the superficiality of possessions is accepted for just what it says.  Kids want to feel cared for, and giving them possessions is not displaying care.  Giving children "things" is not demonstrative of caring.  They would rather have hugs than things.
