I'm confused because my teammates have me moving around so much. I play the setter. this is the first time that I am playing on a team. I used to play for fun and all I knew was to bump set and spike.

  1. In a 6-2, the setter is always in the back row.  That means there are two setters on each team.  When you rotate to the front row, you become the right-side hitter/blocker and probably the backup setter (if the back row setter takes the first ball on defense).

When you line up for the first serve of the game, generally one of the setters will be in the right-back position.  The other one will be opposite him/her in the left front, and switch to right front after the serve.  There will be an outside hitter next to both setters (just behind them in the service rotation) and a middle blocker/hitter in the front row.  You'll have a defensive specialist, or a middle who is also a good passer, in between the setter and the outside hitter in the back row.

Generally the outside hitter is left-front when in the front row, and middle-back when in the back row.  The latter is so that s/he is available to hit the "pipe" set.

When you're back row, just be aware that you have to move to the right-back position when your team is on defense.  Then be ready to get to the net to set if you don't take that first ball over the net.  If the other team bumps the ball over (rather than attacking it), that's a "free ball" -- you run up to the net to be ready to set the ball that is passed to you by one of your teammates.

    Have fun!
