Can you explain why the levees in New Orleans are still weak but 10 billion a month is spent in Iraq?

It is well known that 85 billon dollars has been spent in gov't contracts in Iraq as of 2007 and 10 billion a month right now but we have not made our own bridges secure or the levees strong in New Orleans. People are leaving New Orleans once again, today August 28, 2008.

Should we just tear down the levees and let the river go where it was meant to go during storms...give that land back to nature?

How much will it cost the tax payers if New Orleans floods again? How many lives?? I thought college grads ran the country. A ten year old can figure this out. Why spend 10 billion a month on Iraq. The nation of Georgia near Russia will also be rebuilt at the U,S, A tax payers expense. Promises were already made to help rebuild the destruction done by Russia by our Senators.

  1. thats america its a problem

  2. Cause George Bush doesn't care about black people

  3. A decision was made subtly and undercover not to rehabilitate New Orleans.  The Dutch people use technology and force of will to keep the

North Sea from their homeland but that is a different culture than what we have in America.  Hopefully the Afro American culture that flourished so boldly and wonderfully in New Orleans will find another place to be its bad, beautiful self!!!  and amen!!!

  4. I think it's the state's responsibility to take care of the levee.  But really, I don't understand why the people won't just move.  It irritates me that they expect the gov't to give them houses (which most of them didn't have to begin with) when they knew this could easily happen.

I don't know if we entered the war for the right reasons, but what would be the point in leaving now?  My boyfriend is a soldier and has lost some close friends because of this war..  He would rather go over there and risk his life to finish this war than have his friends have died for nothing.  Why does no one understand that?  We are REBUILDING an entire nation.  How is that a bad thing in any way?

  5. Well I don't think anyone can explain that one to you Fairfax. Not even Bush.

  6. This is because George And d**k are not getting kick backs from New Orleans. Not that I support G&D, but why is fixing New Orleans the responsibility of all Americans, anyway? Shouldn't you guys in New Orleans fix your own levees? Get out and work on it yourselves, raise money with extra taxes and pay someone to do it, etc? Why do farmers in Missouri have to fix your levees?

@Southern Belle: The federal government is supposed to take care of the US, of things that affect all states - not just one. Everything else is supposed to be taken care of by the states themselves. If you want to live in a city that's under water, more power to you. I didn't even mind helping out the first time there was a disaster. But again? Come on people. Fix your mess. I have enough trouble taking care of my own family than to take care of you guys too.

  7. The answer is simple.  Many right-wingers hate and criticize tax and spend liberals...even though what is spent is right here in THIS country.  Infrastructure, literacy programs, etc.   To them however it is ok to spend 10 Billion a month in another country, in a place where the citizens aren't paying U.S. taxes, and build them new roads, schools, etc.  even though they have money from oil they could be spending to fix their own infrastructure.  Sometimes I wonder why we seem so backwards and other countries are excelling and the U.S. is declining.

Edit:  I thought we all paid federal taxes which goes wherever the government wants it to go.  What happened to supporting our fellow Americans?  When 9/11 happened people were willing to do whatever and that was great.  That's what being an American is all about...I think we forget that!

  8. It just shows you where our priorties as a nation lie. The very reason some people will vote for change this election.

  9. Apparently you have no idea what the property value is do you - priceless.

It is a historical city that was not destroyed as claimed - it is still salvagable. Now imagine Marti Gra managed by the likes of Trump, Pritt to name a few... or do you think they invested in waste land for a good cause. New Orleans - reborn is much more attractive then Acapulco or Tampico and in US back yard....

as for Iraq - well, its called double dipping - the private sectors get tax payed protection for free while they sale fuel to the us populace and offer a discount to other countries

  10. Not about black people.

Bush is an IDIOT. Plain and simple.............

  11. Not meaning to sound racist, but the flooded parts of New Orleans was mainly populated by black people.

  12. The levees are the responsibility of the army corp of engineers. Also, much of the money that has gone to New Orleans has gone into the pockets of many of our politicians, who, for the most part, are very corrupt.

And we should rebuild New Orleans as long as we can. Less than half is below sea level(before its mentioned) and this is the home to many people, we can't just take that away, that should be a personal decision.

And if anyone has any appreciation for their own home, there is no need to ask why don't we move or say that we shouldn't rebuild. That's ridiculous.

Jack, we are tax payers too. New Orleans, believe it or not, is apart of America. As Americans, we should have no issue with helping another American out, we shouldn't be split by states, not when we are all one nation. We'd help you in a heartbeat if anything happened. It's a shame so many have a problem with helping us.

And the Army Corp of Engineers, the ones responsible for the levees, are Federal.

  13. Thank the politicians in the chocolate city. And the people who were using the money they were given for alcohol and cigarettes instead of re-fortifying.

  14. New Orleans consistently spent the levee money on foolishness. And that predates the devil Bush by many years. New Orleans liberals had much more important priorities than hurricanes and flooding. And they paid the price.

The liberals have found uses for the war money that equal 5000 times what the war is costing. Education, energy, poverty, crime, the elderly, social security, health care, and now the levees.
