Can you find out who a phone number belongs to?

I got a missed call from a number. I have tried to call it back but it rings and then makes strange noises! Can I find out who the phone number belongs to?

There is no legal "reverse directory" in the UK. Actually, I don't even know of an 'illegal' one either.

If this persists then you could report it to BT and ask them for help; but it sounds as if you are being called by a fax machine or some other device with a modem.

It may be from a call centre that call several numbers at once and abort the ones with no reply. (Don't worry they want you to buy something) or as the previous person mentioned it could be a fax number (who most likely also want you to spend money)

Yip have to agree....sounds like a fax machine...someone probably mis-dialled

Have you dialled 1471 - then tried Googling the number.  The strange noise - is it a long tone? Probably a fax line.
