If you believe you have the (UK) marriage year, vol.no. page no.of an ancestor , eg. 1887, is there anywhere on the Internet you can find the name of the surname of their spouse? am I asking the impossible? Is the only answer to buy the certificate from the GRO?

  1. I would suggest posting this question on the UK Answers Board as they would know better then us.

  2. You might try www.familysearch.org and see if they have any information.  Type in the name of your ancestor and see if anything comes up.

I know Ancestry.com has some UK census records, but it is a paid service.

    Good luck in your search!

  3. Yes you can -

If you have found your marriage on freebmd you may get from 2 - 8 other names on the page.

Copy them down (if it's a groom you have, you'll need the brides names or visa versa)

Then do a check on the 1891 and 1901 census for matching husbands and their spouses in or around the same areas.

I hope you can understand this it's really hard to explain, but it does work, I've been doing it for years when I've been researching a twig on my tree and didn't want to have to buy the certificate.
