If the eq'n is in standard form, which is is essentially, then the vertex is given by the ordered pair as:

(x, y) ---> {-b/(2a), f[-b/(2a)]}

plug the a, b and c into this and you will easily get the vertex.

g(x)= 2x^2 - x - 3

vertex : (h,k)

h = -b/2a = -(1)/2(2) = 1/4

k = g(x) = 2(1/4)^2 - (1/4) - 3

= 2(1/16) - 1/4 - 3

= 1/8 - 1/4 - 3

= 1/8 - 2/8 - 24/8

= -25/8

vertex : (1/4, -25/8)
