Can you fire an employee for not attending a mandatory meeting if only one date and time are offered?

  1. You answered your own question.  the employers ability to fire you is equal to your ability to quit.  Neither of you needs a reason.


  2. If you're in an at will state, they don't owe you any explanation at all.  You can try fighting it at the unemployment office if you have something in writing, but you can tell them about only one time being available.

    Mandatory means just that..  You are there or you have a really d**n good excuse not to be.


  4. More information is needed to answer this question. My first thought is no an employee cannot be fired for the reason above however, when the employee received the invitation for this mandatory meeting was it stated that not attending this meeting was grounds for immediate dismissal? If so, that employee could have an issue.

    Immediate termination is usually received for more serious infractions such as the unauthorized sharing of sensitive information, theft, etc.
