Can you fly the union jack on a boat?

It depends on the boat and who is on it.

The Union Flag may only be flown from Royal Navy vessels. When in dock, the Royal Navy uses the Union Flag as a jack. It is only flown from the main staff when an Admiral of the Fleet or the Queen is aboard.

Civil vessels are not permitted to fly the Union Flag on boats, and it is a criminal offence to do so. Civil vessels must use the Red Ensign.

The union jack is suposed to be displayed when the boat is at port. it is displayed  off the bow

Are you in the U.S.?

If you are make sure it flies below the Stars and Stripes or the U.S. Ensign. The bow idea is a good one.
