Question:

Can you get 4d ultrasounds in very late pregnancy?

I will only be in the city from 36 weeks pregnant and I kind of want to have another scan to make sure my baby is a boy. Can I get this type of scan so late? Will they be able to see everything? Should I get a normal scan instead? Can you even get a normal scan for no medical reason?

  1. Yes, you can get one at 36 weeks. However, it'll be a little harder to get a clear shot of the genitals because he'll be really crammed in there.

A 4D scan is a rendering of a 2D scan, you'll have a normal ultrasound, and every so often they'll press a button that will create a 4D rendering of the baby. It isn't a seperate procedure.

You won't be able to get one at a medical office, if you don't have a medical reason.

You need to look up a 4D imaging center in your area. Google it.

If you were told you were having a boy, you're probably having a boy. When ultrasounds are wrong, its almost always that its a boy that they're saying is a girl because they can't get a clear shot of the p***s.

    Good luck!

  2. How far along should I be before I have a 4D Ultrasound?

If you plan on having only one 4D Ultrasound examination, we would recommend having the examination performed between the 27th and 34th week of the pregnancy. However, excellent images of your baby can be obtained anytime after about 26 weeks of pregnancy. Many mothers obtain more than one 4D Ultrasound and have images to enjoy from their second and third trimesters.

  3. Where I live they only refer you to a 2d scan if they medically need to.

I would say the suggested time frame for a 3d/4d scan is 24-34 weeks. After that there is barely any room for the baby to move if he/she is sitting in an awkward position. You can call and ask but I believe 36 weeks is too far along.

  4. If your 36 weeks and have had multiple ultrasounds m sure your having a boy.lol. But i do believe you can have the 4d up until you have the baby, the image just worse and worse less noticeable. Less movement. But I would trust the 4d more than the regular sonogram because my friend was told she was having a girl then went and got the 4d and then they told her she was having a boy..so you never no but she was not as far as you... Also i don't believe the do normal scans in less its medical reason the far along in pregnecey.

  5. In Australia, I KNOW for a fact that you can't. You need a reason to have any ultrasound (unless it is done at a routine antenatal appt in the docs office). You could go to your G.P though and ask if he can make up a reason so you can have another scan. We did that at 36 weeks. My doctor just said that he was concerned about my level of amniotic fluid so they allowed one.

It might not be worth getting a 3d/4d scan because the baby is quite big now, and you might not be able to see much. But if it's the same price as the normal scan, then why not???

    Good Luck.

And to whoever gave a thumbs down... you're full of c**p. This woman does live in Aus, and you can't get one without a referral from your doctor... I speak from PERSONAL experience

  6. The places around here that you can get 3D/4D's at only allow you to get them after 28 weeks. They also suggest coming in later than that, because the later you go in, the better (and more clear) the picture will be.

  7. You can get this scan now but it's harder to see as the baby gets bigger.

  8. There shouldn't be a problem as long as you're prepared to pay for it. We'll be doing the same too. Good luck!

  9. First write all your questions down, then  call a place that does the 4d ultrasound.  I did this for my daughter's first pregnancy around 30th week.  It was so worth the effort of driving over 100 miles to get it.  We watched on video while my grand-daughter was swinging the umbilical cord  like she was ready to lasso a steer. We watched her suck her toes and her fingers, there is no words on this earth that can describe that amount of joy.  If you can catch only a moment in time such as we did, it will be worth a million bucks.  An option worth fighting for.  PS one of her pictures looked just like her when she was born.
