i would like to get the mirena birth control but the website says this:

Mirena® intrauterine contraceptive (IUC) is appropriate for women who:

* Have at least one child

* Are looking for a hassle-free and reversible form of birth control for up to 5 years (or less, if you choose)1

* Are in a stable, mutually monogamous sexual relationship

I am 19 and working my way through college. I am already on the pill but its making me gain weight and I already know I dont want kids until Im done with school and teaching. I want to be ready.

I guess what Im asking is, can I get Mirena even though Im not a mother?

  1. no. because with a baby your uterus stretches, and it will never actually get down to it's original size and then the mirena will fit. But until then no

  2. IUD's are for women in stable committed relationships and who have had a child for the following reasons:

1.IUD's can increase the risk of STD's causing harm to the reproductive system due to its placement. (hence the reason for committed monogamous relationships)

    2. IUD's can be expelled easier from a womb that has not experienced a pregnancy due to the lack of room.

In short you can possibly find a doctor to give you an IUD but I wouldn't recommend it.  Try the nuva ring.
