  1. No, you can't.

A personal can volunteer to be a peer counselor or work at a hotline.  In order to counsel people professionally, you need at least a master's degree.

  2. To be a drug and alcohol counselor, yes. Any other type requires at least a master's degree.

To be a "consoler", all you have to do is be supportive. No degree needed.

  3. The term counselor has vast definitions.  Everyone calls themselves a counselor if they work with people (my favorite one to laugh at is "Your real estate counselor" or "Camp counselor".  A true counselor usually has a master's degree or above level.  This is because of all the skills and technique courses that have to be done, not to mention the internships.  Two of my classes I had to "counsel" a fellow student and be videotaped.  The tape was played back to the entire class for critique.  I had to demonstrate different types of questioning, clarification, and summarizing.  I had to integrate techniques of Glasser, Rogers, and others.

Most drug and alcohol counselors have only a 2 year degree.
