  1. No - you have to SHOW your SS card.

  2. actually

usually employers want two forms of ID

    such as

birth certificate ss card, ID, passport etc

it doesn't necessarily have to be a ss card

your employer will let you know what the acceptable forms of identification are.

  3. One of the things you must prove is your "eligiblity to work"--the actual SSA card is on of the documents that is on the list.  So is your certified US birth certificate.

However, if you simply know your SSN off the top of your head, you probably are also guessing at exactly how your name appears on the card.  With the issue of aliens, making an error with your SSN can be very embarassing and stressful in the workplace.  My error was decades ago and I did it on my very first job.  The payroll department called my dad to verify the number and have *him* explain to me the importance of doing this correctly.  You can bet I know exactly where my card is (it's in the safe).

As an adult in the tax industry, I frequent have to work with people who's tax refunds are being held up or questioned because of a name/ssn mismatch/typo.  A mistake this year is preventing people from getting a stimulus check.

  4. Almost all employers will want to SEE your ss card, to ensure the number is valid and correct.  You can apply for a duplicate card if you lost yours.  See http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa....
