I'm travelling to Vietnam and the tourist visa is uber expensive with visa connections. I heard that it is possible to get one for cheap in Bangkok. Does anybody know for sure and how much it is, if so, that would help me a lot! Thanks!

  1. Yes you can get a visa but it not that cheap. A vietnamese visa costs about USD40-50 in local currency no matter where you get it. If you get it through a Khao San road agency in BKK you will pay more.

Doing it yourself is easy. You need 3 passport photos and 2 photocopies of your passport.

  2. I am currently in Bangkok.  There are an infinite amount of tourist offices where one can get a visa to almost any country in Asia. It's super convenient.  I have recently seen Vietnam visas advertised for 40-45 USD on store fronts.  There seems to be a standard price for each country.  It may vary from office to office by a few dollars. Don't expect to get a deal.  You can't bargain with them. It's standard.

I recently went to Cambodia and I paid $30 USD which took a day to process.

Remember, if you are in a rush to get it, it will cost a bit more - for one day processing - ($5USD, perhaps) but if you are going to hang out in Bangkok for a few days then you could go with the normal processing time of 3 days.  It's cheaper by about $5-10 USD.

    Good Luck.

  3. The last time I went to Vietnam, my friend a travel agent had my Visa done for me so I would not have to stand in line. It took 2-3 days and cost closer to $60.  You can, as already stated, go directly to the embassy, drop it off and pick it up in a couple of days as a friend did. Relax..go to Bangkok. Shop, eat good food, and chill.

Keep a copy of your Thailand passport stamp and the picture/info page with you. I traveled  another spot to chill for a few days and came back to Bangkok, then took off to Vietnam. You can even fly domestically without the Passport. This was in the summer 2004. NO worries. Have fun.

  4. Define "cheap"?

I don't know why people use Visa companies for, when all you have to do is to go to the Vietnam Consulate's website, download/fill out the .pdf, and send the app+passport+photo+fee ($45)+SASE, and you're done.

OR, if you're lucky enough to be in San Francisco, just go drop off your stuff, and it's done by the next afternoon.

And to the previous answerer... That was a dumb statement.  Just dumb.

  5. you can, directly from the Vietnam Embassy. it is not cheap, you have to stand in line (Vietnam style). Be there early, it takes several hours and they close early! If you are pressed for time, use a local travel agency. (they send out a courier, who stands in line with the rest of them :-)
