  1. are u in england if so the check out R & J's Chinchilla rescue is where i got mine a couple of weeks ago. There are so many little chinnies that need homes after being treated badly. There are so many more benefits going to a rescue than giving even more money to the pet trade when they dont need like like rescue centres do. You will be given a pet which is already, tame friendly happy and healthy and they're always there if you have any kind of problem with your chinchilla as well as a supply of food etc. etc. please at least check their website out xxxx

  2. We adopted our chinchilla for $50 and because the people that surrendered "him" told them the wrong s*x we ended up with a her and 2 kits in a month. We rehomed one kit and used the money to neuter the boy we kept.

  3. I dont know about cheap but Im sure it wouldnt be that much. All you can do is call around at different shelters in your area and ask. There are also chincillia rescues. You can find them on Petfinder.com. Happy hunting and good luck.

  4. You might be able to find one on petfinder.com

  5. yes adoption is a great option. If you are planning to purchase a chinchilla, there are many factors that you should consider before bringing this exotic animal into your life. I recommend that you do some research and think about some of the things that you might not have already thought of.

Is there a vet near you who has experience with chinchillas, having treated them before?

Have the necessary funds to get everything you need for this pet?

-Chinchillas need a larger cage. The bigger the better. They need plenty of exercise and generally need a large wheel.

-They need a good pellet food and fresh Timothy hay daily along with fresh water(best to be bottled)

-They need a variety of sizes of chew sticks, lava rock is also a good thing for them to use for gnawing.

You should consider that Chinchillas can live to be 18-20 years old.

Always consider issues such as time, space, temperature and humidity. Chinchillas must be in an environment that is never above 75ºF/23.9ºC.

Some people may be allergic to some of the "chinchilla supplies" such as fresh hay and dust. Take the time to spend with and around chinchillas before purchasing to see if they have any affect on you.

Chinchillas are not like dogs or cats. They do not generally like to be held. With time and trust, most chinchillas will socialize with you, but they very rarely want to sit still for very long.

Chinchillas cannot regulate their own body temperature and will absorb the heat from your hands, which may be one reason why they prefer not to stay there. Will you be satisfied with owning an animal that does not want to be cuddled alot.

Other animals in your home may pose a threat to a chinchilla. Each animal has its own personality. Some get along great while others will never like each other, no matter how hard you try. Chinchillas are prey animals, so don't be surprised if your dog, cat, snake, bird scares your chinchilla. These animals may also make a chinchilla very nervous. Do you have a separate room to house the chinchilla in away from other animals, if necessary?

You must have the ability to purchase necessary supplies at a nearby location, from a local breeder, or online. It can be difficult to find some of the supplies that a chinchilla needs. Many pet stores carry food that lacks the proper nutrients and other unsafe items for chinchillas. This includes treats, toys, and even cages. Spending extra money for shipping and handling may be the only way that you can keep a chinchilla in good health.

Good brands of food ( pellet food should be just pellets and nothing else mixed in it)

    -Mazuri

-Hay that is not alfalfa based (alfalfa is high in protein and can cause liver problems and bladder stones.

Use a Grass hay that includes Timothy, Brome, Orchard Grass and Oat. (loose hay and not cubed is best for helping to grind down the teeth as well)

Many people do not realize that there are chinchilla rescues. Many times chinchillas find themselves without homes because someone decides they no longer want one or the committment to one as a pet.

petfinder has a list of chinchillas that are up for adoption

  6. I don't know if it is common, but I fostered two beautiful chins for the SPCA.  Check on petfinder and call around to shelters to see.
