Can you get a filter for any fish tank or bowl, or does it have to come with one?

See, we got 4 Goldfish a while ago, and I've noticed them surfacing for air, and my concern is that they might not live very long this way.

So, is it possible to get a (decent) filter for any type of Fish bowl or Tank, or do you need to get a whole new tank or something.

URGENT! Help will be greatly appreciated.

  1. Yes you can get whatever filter you want

However your gold fish should be in at least a 55g depending on their size as of right now.

If you have 4 common "feeder" goldfish you will eventually need at least a 100g for them to get to their full potential.

Goldfish are the most misunderstood freshwater fish.  The misconception is that they can live in a bowl. They are extremley messy and just one fancy goldfish requires at least 20g with an addition 10g per extra fish. Same thing goes with common goldfish except just one needs 55g.

Goldfish can live upwards 30+ years and get up to 24" depending on type.

  2. if you buy a new tank it will come with one but you could a seprate

  3. Of course you can buy a new filter. Here are some:petsmart.com.Try your local petsmart/petco.

  4. YES! This is urgent of your goldfish will die in a tiny bowl! Your goldfish need a 50 gallon tank! They will get 6 inches long, maybe 8 if your lucky! If they do not get another tank their growth will be stunted and there internal organs will continue to grow until they either stop working or rupture and the fish dies after a few short years when it could easily live to 15- or 20 years of age! Get a tank with a VERY Strong filter, goldfish are VERY messy!
