Can you get a library card from a library if you don't live in the area?

I've noticed the nice collection of online books major libraries have online and mine does not.

The next time I'm in a major city, could I get a library card from a library and use it to access their online books? Or do you need to live in the area?

  1. The way it works in my city is, is that locals get the card for free and non-locals have to pay a small price.

  2. In IL you need to get a library card from the library in the county you live in. I am allowed to check out books from libraries in other counties with my card.

  3. This really depends on the library.  The best thing to do would be to contact the library's membership department and ask or look on their website.

  4. go to your library and ask them to order the books through interlibrary loan.  our library won't let nonresidents get a library card unless they have reciprocal borrowing priviledges.
