A cop gave me a ticket for doing 23 in a 20 zone. Would a judge waive that? It almost seems ridiculous.

  1. well you broke the law  At 20 mph what, is a low zone . So it must be a proteceted area and I would say Yes . It was a 20  zone

  2. Technically you were speeding and the ticket is probably valid.  The accepted theory is that police will overlook up to 5 miles over the speed limit, but that is not set in stone.

  3. It really depends.  In my jurisdiction if you get a ticket for school zone or residential area, construction zone, etc. even for 3 miles over the judge would never waive that.  On the highway it might be a different story.  It might seem ridiculous, but speed limits are there for a reason.  Police officers know what their judges would throw out and wouldn't waste their time writing a ticket like that if there was even a chance.

  4. Out of curiousity, what were the road conditions like?  Sometimes even the speed limit is too fast if the road conditions are poor (like heavy rains, snow, ice, heavy traffic, etc.)

is it a small town with a "zero tolerance" policy? There are many smaller areas that expect everyone to go the speed limit.  Any construction in the area? an emergency vehicle?

  5. Yes you can but since police officers get paid on hourly wages + commission when they patrol thats why you got it and thats why he/she didn't give you a break.  And if you went over it isn't much of a fine, worse yet if you went 30 or 40 mph.

  6. yes.  You broke the law. If its 20, you must go 20.  Its black and white. You also have the right contest it at court.  And no...... cops dont get commission on tickets.  The fines of the ticket go back to the state miscellaneous funds pool in every state.  Which, later goes to fix the roads that you drive on, pay for rec centers that you enjoy, keeps the beaches clean after you made a mess, and pay the teachers, so your kids would be educated.  So, you have now contributed to your own future.  Congrats!

  7. go to court, you will in all probability get a slap on the wrist or nothing

  8. "ticket for going 3 miles over the speed limit"

    you answered your own question.

*Edit - You already got the ticket. Paying the fine is another matter.

  9. Speed limit is 20mph. You were traveling at 23mph. 23 is more than 20. You lose....................

    Sorry

  10. not if it's in a school zone, or construction zone....

i got a ticket for doing 2 over in a school zone once..sucked

a judge won't waive a ticket these days, all cops do is write tickets anymore..they've become as much a moneymaking institution as anything else in society...

  11. You can be ticketed for going just one mile over the posted speed limit. Although many officers would not bother pulling you over for that, they definitely can.

  12. it depends if the cop is a good or crooked cop
