I want to take pix of things about 1cm across.

  1. Actually, many new point & shoot cameras are now offering very close focus abilities in their macro modes. Canon, to the best of what I've actually seen so far for myself, seems to be the best for that sort of thing. In fact, in some cases you can even get the object right up against the lens and still be able to focus on it.

That said, in a DSLR, you will get much larger file sizes and the ability to digitally crop in much closer after the fact. Depending on what sort of thing is being done, this could be better.

Anything under... well I suppose over this side of the atlantic it'd be about $250... check out Canon's A590, it has image stabilization in its lens, and it's 8 megapixels with 4x optical zoom, and macro is decent.

Hope that helps you out some :-)
