Can you get addicted to any food at all?

Can you get addicted to any food at all, provided you always eat/drink it?

Or does it have to have a particular substance eg. caffeine for you to get addicted.

Because ever since i started drinking soy milk, I can't stop drinking it and craving it. So am i addicted to it?

  1. addiction is a very misunderstood term, if you were addicted you would NEED it and yes, addiction can occur with anything, just like allergies, you can develop an allergy (or in this case addiction) to anything but only if you have the pre-disposed genetic pattern that would trigger that sort of brain response to the chemicals in the "addictive" substance, as far as your problem goes, i'd say the only way to find out whether your truly addicted, is to stop and see if you develop anything resembling "withdrawal symptoms". i hope that answers your question!

  3. I'd call craving a food a psychological issue..but just about as strong as an addiction. But intake that causes physical addiction; caffeine, nicotine, alcohol...put those in your body & you will need more to feel relief.

  5. No lol, I greatly doubt you can get addicted to just any food. A definition of addiction is "psychological and bodily dependence on a substance or practice which is beyond voluntary control." Does this describe you? If the world was suddenly to run dry of soy milk, how desperate would you be? I really don't think you can compare it to a drug or alcohol addiction when the user would go to any lengths to get  a fix.  The best way of finding out would be to go cold turkey and see if you have any bodily reaction i.e headaches, tremors etc from withdrawals. Sometimes I think I'm addicted to chocolate, but I can survive without it! :)

    You might want to be careful with drinking too much of it though because its quite calorie dense, but I have to agree its very yummy, esp the chocolate type or with some chai tea!  

  6. don't think addicted but, as for myself, I tend to find a food I like then have it as much as possible, so I would say It's a habbit. But then I get sick of that food and then find something else to "habbit" over.

    Caffeine is still a natrual part of plants such as tea, coffee, cocoa, and guarana.

  10. well, you're addicted to it if you spend your last dollar on it, crave for it every time and always made sure you have a way to get it. on my broke days, i spend my last dollar til payday on my sodas and hot cheetos and its sad but they're so good lol. if you can answer those few things with a yes, or even one of them with a yes, then yes you're addicted. but soy milk is good i guess its a replacement for milk but i wouldn't know i'm lactose intolerent.  

  11. i like soy milk to but then i started craving regular milk after that.  Both of them are good for your heart anyways.  But soy milk also lowers your cholesterol too ;D I can get addicted to chocolate, coffee (every now and then), tea, dr.pepper....i don't know it could just be my favorite thing that i really enjoy indulging in. Atleast you are getting your calcium. Everyone has to have a little bit of calcium in their bodies, 3 cups of milk is the recomendation for a daily basis.

I'm addicted to chilli, but I think you're right, it's the substance in it that makes it hot that I'm probably addicted to.  Soy milk?  I'd say it's more like you're deficient in a certain vitamin or mineral contained in the soy milk.  Each brand has different ingredients so it's hard to say what it may be.  Could be the proteins, could be the iodine (if it's got kombu in it), don't really know.
