My husband has a prescription for 10mg marinol (synthetic THC) The cost here is the US is $1450 for 60 capsules. He should take these 3 times/day. We are uninsured and cannot afford it. We are traveling to Costa Rica this week. I wonder if we can fill the prescription there for less money.

  1. Yes, you can probably get a US prescription filled here.  My mom does it all the time when she travels.  What she does is that she goes to see a Costa Rican doctor.  He charges around $50 dollars.  He will give you a prescription, and you can go and get it filled for a lot less than you would in the US.

Hmm...I don't know if you will be able to get marinol, though.  As they say, nothing beats a try but a fail, right?

    Best of luck

  2. You  can't get an American prescription filled unless it comes from a Costa Rica doctor as a few others have pointed out.  That's not to say the drug is not available; it might be available here WITHOUT a prescription.

However, some drugs are more expensive in Costa Rica than in the U.S., and some less. The top pharmacy  is Farmacia Fischel: http://www.fischel.co.cr/.

The site is in Spanish, you might want to email them (most of the doctors/pharmacist do speak and read English) and consult with them for more information.

they could answer you ir there are marinol here ...

(but you can buy it in a cheaper drugstore)

  4. You can not afford health insurance but you can afford a trip for two to Costa Rica.  What a wonderful world we live in when our travel is more important than our health.

  5. Walk into most any drugstore and tell them what you want. Worst case is they tell you no.

If you have the US prescription on hand, better yet.

    good luck

  6. You will need a local doctor to change your US prescription to a special CR prescription (they are green, with coding for the controlled substances committee). Then you can cgo to a pharmacy and buy it.

While it is true most pharmacies in CR don't ever ask you for any prescription or doctor's referral, this is not the case when green prescriptions are involved.
