Question:

Can you get an open cover or hood for a Boiler Flue to stop fumes from going back in the house?

We live in a flat where our neighbours downstairs boiler flue is right underneath our window. We cannot open it or the room is filled with fumes. I seem to remember we had this problem on a house with our own boiler and we had a little hood fitted to deflect the fumes out rather than straight up so they dissipated before they hit our window. I cannot find anyone who seems to know anything about these hoods and yet I feel sure this must be a common problem. Anyone got any suggestions on a) where I can get a hood or b) how else to solve the problem.

I am not sure what the Building Regs are for this sort of thing - perhaps there is a builder out there who can advise???

  1. yes you can go to your local building supplier and he will tell you what options you have as there is a few i'm assuming it is a 6-8 inch extraction pipe in which case problem solved hope you do ok if not i'll come and do the job for you but it might cost depending where you live lol

  2. You need to establish what sort of boiler they have installed and more importantly what sort of flue. If its a square flue then its balanced or if its a round flue then it will be a fanned flued appliance. You cannot just fit anything around these flues as it could cause potential damage or danger! Either flue should be sited at least 300mm from an openable window. i would recomend contacting a local Corgi installer and they will be able to give you some advise on the matter. Not all of us installers will charge for this.

  3. Believe you can get a deflector as above. Plumber merchant should be able to help.

Believe regs state for a fan assisted flue, should be min 300mm below an openanable window.

Note fumes are dangerous to your health - contain Carbon Monoxide.
