In other words would I get a shock if I touched the live wire in a socket but touched NOTHING else apart from standing on a wood floor?

  1. The third answer is right on. As long as you are standing on solid ground, no matter what it is made of you complete the circuit.

  2. No, if NOT touching anything else. It isn't worth the risk. Turn the power to the socket off!

To touch the center you would have to stick your finger inside, and if even a bump  the threads with the side of your finger it will LIGHT you up!

  3. Unless your floating in mid air you are most likely grounded through the floor. Wood may not be the best conductor of electricity but you shouldn't take any chances. Always turn off the main breaker when performing repairs or installing sockets or outlets. Your family will thank you for taking that extra trip down the stairs. Also its usually a good idea to have someone monitor the main switch to ensure someone doesn't think the breaker tripped and turns the power back on. Electricity is not forgiving so be extra careful.

  4. No, because you are not grounded at that point.
