Would it be possible for me to take in a pair of fake glasses (like these: http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp;jsessionid=18382A408000D867810E05B43B153710.app13-node1?itemdescription=true&itemCount=60&id=13736616&parentid=W_ACC_SUNGLASSES&sortProperties=+product.marketingPriority,-product.startDate&navCount=392&navAction=poppushpush&color=) and get them fitted with real prescription lenses at the optometrist? Sorry if this is a really stupid question :)

  1. You'd have to physically take them to an optician to see whether the frames are strong enough and made of the right materials to replace the lenses without destroying the frame.  Some opticians won't fill a frame unless it is theirs for sale or a model they carry, or you waive their responsibility in case they damage them in the process.

    They're nice frames...

  2. I've been a optical lab manager for several years now, and my experience is that, for the most part, you get what you pay for when it comes to glasses. If you buy cheap, you get cheap. The frames look like they could be done, but it is really hard to say with seeing it in person. I would buy a few of them if you do get them made. The frames probably won't be on sale for long. This way if you break the frame you can still use the lenses in one of the spares.

  3. Yep. My cousin got a pair of sun glasses from Hot Topic and had them put prescription lenses in for her to wear as regular glasses.

  4. I wouldn't suggest it. The frame is not really an ophthalmic frame suitable for prescription lenses. What if the frame breaks and you can't get a new one? You will be stuck with lenses that cost much more than the frame itself. Most of those are cheap quality, designed to be used as they are sold, for cosmetic use. The hinges and  plastic are far different than regular eyeglass frames. Bring in a picture of the frame to an optical to see if there is a style similar to it. Many places have different companies who have inexpensive frames that are copies of more expensive ones.  In the long run it will be more serviceable. Not a stupid question, who isn't looking to save money these days.
