Question:

Can you get fluctuations in your BBT?

I am 11 dpo and my BBT since ovulation has been between 36.5 - 37.08 degrees celsius. However this morning it dropped to 36.18 degrees. I then expected AF to show but nothing and no symptoms either. Am quite new to BBT charting so not sure whats the norm. Can changes happen in your temp from day to day and if so what could cause them?

  1. Sorry I don't know the abbreviations dpo and AF...so if I missed something let me know. Here is what I gotta say though.

If you have already ovulated, then the sudden drop can be an indication that progesterone (the hormone produced after ovulation and that raise your BBT) has dropped and you are about to menstruate.

Besides that..yes, fluctuations occur all the time..that is why you look at the overall pattern and the temperature "shift" found after ovulation and then before menstruation.

I am a trained fertility awareness educator and have been charting for over 7 years.

  2. Hi,

Sometimes (between 4-10 DPO) a 1 day dip in your BBT can indicate implantation of the egg. If you temp rises up again today and is slightly higher than previoius results that too is a good sign.

On the other hand it could also mean that your period is on it's way.

If this is your first cycle though it is going to be a learning curve for you - over the next few cycles you will begin to see a pattern, it could be that every month you temp drops prior to your period starting.

Hang in there and wait and see.

  3. Typically a one day dip isn't enough to sway the chart but it'll depend on tomorrow's reading to see if it's a trend.  It seems late for an implantation dip, which is usually 6-10DPO, but I guess it could be.  This is where the temp dips the day the embryo implants in the uterious and not all women get one.  However, if you expected AF this morning it's possible your temp went down today and you'll start tomorrow.  Good luck!!!
