  1. It depends on the standards of the aquatic associations and pools where you are. In Canada, the Red Cross and Royal Lifesaving Society certifications are Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, First Aid and National Lifeguard. There are actually more, but these three are the main recognized steps.

    The minimum legal requirement to work as a lifeguard is Bronze cross, although the National Lifeguard certification is required to supervise a pool. Some places will not hire you without National Lifeguard, regardless of the legal minimums.

    Often you can get hired while taking the final certifications and sometimes a pool will hire you as a part-timer or a junior guard when you are still too young to get your final certification.
