Can you get homeschooling free if your high school helps you?

I asked a lady that works at my high school and she said that you fill out a form, and turn it into the Department of Education, and you leave your current school. But when I look online I see that mostly everyone gets their homeschooling program through a site.

  1. There are some free online schools that are actually public schools. To see if your state participates in free online public school,

    check with http://www.k12.com/homeschool

Some school districts run their own homeschool programs. Many of these consist of handing you textbooks and telling you to complete assignments. Then you would meet with a teacher to chart your progress.  These are more often called independent study programs.

It sounds like you are more interested in an online virtual school. Some of these are free and some are private so they cost money. Regardless, it sounds like for your state you will need to do some paperwork to notify them that you will be homeschooling. For the laws for your state go to http://www.hslda.com and do a search for your state.

  2. The cost of online schooling depends on the school that provides; laptops, Internet discount (1-year), and the tools. Transfers are free, report card, and they might ask for immunization and birth certificate.

  3. The employee you spoke with is probably talking about home*bound* education through the district/school.  This is not the same as homeschooling.  Homebound is for those with severe medical or behavioral issues.

To attend a *virtual* public school, through a school district, is not the same as homeschooling either.  It's public school at home.  Yes, it's free since it's a public school.

Homeschooling laws vary by state.  Look up your state here and see what you have to do - but it won't be free, nor will it be through your high school.

  4. Yes, you're probably looking for a virtual school, rather than a home bound program.  Here's some info that may help explain things a bit:
