Question:

Can you get hooked on smoking, if you only smoke in a 6 or 7 hour period?

For the past week or so, I smoke when Im alone at home or until my sisters get home from school. So usually I wake up at around 8 and they get home at 2:30 so thats around 6 or 7 hours or so. Usually I smoke like every hour or maybe like 5 a day in that period. Im not smoking that many becuase Im getting a craving to smoke them, I just usually do it out of boredom or Im kinda in a habit where I just smoke at those times like I do. Every here and there I will actually get a craving to smoke, but not too much. I dont smoke when they are home, so usually im only smoking in a 6 or 7 hour period, so im not smoking all day from when I wake up, til I go to sleep. With that being said, with the amount im smoking and the circumstances I have, is it possible ot pick up the habit of smoking or even become addicted?

    look at your cravings and just because your bored...

    people say its easy to quit.. LIES!!!!!

  3. I was a "social" smoker for years before i got addicted. BUT i eventually did. Its inevitable. STOP while you can. I have been smoke free for 1 month now :)

  4. There is a substance called nicotine present in all cigerettes. All you need is one puff to get addicted. Just because you're not a chain smoker doesn't mean you're not addicted. You don't need to have a craving for it to smoke; you do it because you want to. After 30 years of smoking, my father stopped smoking but even so, amidst smokers , he would love to take a very deep breath in, several times. You know passive smoking is just as bad. Look, brother, you feel guilty about what you're doing-you know , you can just stop it and feel a whole lot better. You'll live longer, smell better, reduce your chances for getting  a whole array of CANCERS and other diseases of the lungs and in the process you'll save a lot of money. Like any bad habits, it's not going to be easy. You want to stop and you're strong enough to kick the habit . Best of luck to you as I know within a week you' going to QUIT SMOKING.

Yeah, it sounds like you might be starting to crave them and that is bad.  If you don't want to be a smoker for years and then go through the agonizing withdrawals that quitting brings about, then you should stop now.  Plus, there are plenty of obvious health risks that I know you are already aware of, so I won't undermine your intelligence by posting them here.  Good luck.

  6. Sure. It's not going to be as strong an addiction as it would be if you were smoking all the time, but you could certainly become addicted and the fact that you're getting occasional cravings suggests that you're already on that road.

  7. Nicotine is the ingredient in tobacco that gives its narcotic characteristic. Some people who have tried to quit claim it's similar to trying to quit a heroin or cocaine addiction.  Once you're hooked, you gradually need to take more cigarettes to quench your nicotine fix. What starts out as 5 to 7 cigarettes a day gradually becomes a pack-a-day habit, as you encounter pressure and stress in your daily life. You need to reach for a cigarette to calm yourself, after a stressful period.  At $35 a carton, say you smoke a carton every 2 weeks (5 packs a week),  that's $910 a year, not counting sales tax, and the higher medical insurance premium you pay when you check "yes" on the box that ask, "do you smoke?"

    Edit -- forgot to mention, if you're a guy, you'll develop ED (erectile dysfunction) later in life.  Statistically, most men with ED are also smokers.

  8. Like any other habit (addiction), the way you get hooked is trying to figure out how much you can do without getting hooked.   I quit 30 years ago on the National Quit Smoking Day.
