Question:

Can you get into the air force with mild asthma?

My boyfriend wants to get a technical geographical job in the air force. Or course he would have to go to boot camp, even though the job is technical. He is quite fit and can do everything like playing tennis for hours and he is fine, no wheezing or anything. He can do any kind of outdoor activity. He's even doing some pre-bootcamp training. He had some asthma as a child, and the only time he gets something like it now is when he is around cats (sounds more like an allergy??) and when he is sick. His recruiter said he had to get a note from a doctor about it, and the doctor said the best he could do was say he had the mildest form of asthma (practically nonexistent), and he took a breathing test and it was 102%? Whatever that means. Is it possible he can still get in the air force? Has anyone else with extremely mild asthma gotten in?

  1. There have been some waivers granted for those with asthma. But, what you describe is reactive airway disease and that is disqualifying as well. The source below is the medical standard.

  2. Yep, so long as you can make it through basic.

  3. asthma past age 13 is a PDQ no waivers authorized.  All five Branches.

doesn't matter how mild, severe or even if it is just exercise induced.  if there is documentation of him having it past his 13th Birthday he cannot get in.  Lying about it will only make it worse when he is caught.

  4. Mrsjvb is completely right.

Asthma (no matter how mild) is a PDQ (Permanent Disqualifier) with No waivers for all 5 branches.
