If you live in a state with deposits you can make a little money...  However, if you have beer bottles with pop tops, not the twist offs, you may be able to sell them to homebrew beer making clubs for a decent amount.  I pay about 7.99 a case (24 bottles) locally here for empties.

Many states have deposit on bottles and you can get the money from that. beer cans can be recycled for aluminium in any state if you take it to a scrap metal yard they pay by weight.
