  1. The staff, including the executive director (not CEO) can be paid, the board of directors can not - they are considered volunteers.

Money for paying staff salaries comes from 'general overhead' budget (like rent, supplies, etc.) and such funds, if they are not covered by one or several program grants, must be raised by the organization in some fashion., either funding from foundations and grants that supply operating expenses, or interest from holdings or bequests.  Money spent on operating funds for staff functions such as management, fundraising, etc. are compared against the money spent serviing the cause of the organizaiton by many funders.  For example, if your organization spends more than 30% of its budget on salary and overhead, it is not considered an effective nonprofit, and your chances of obtaining donations are greatly reduced.

  2. oh yea...... these people get paid, it's not all built on love.....

  3. The board may NOT be paid at a nonprofit. That's what makes it a nonprofit -- nonprofit boards are not paid.

Staff members may be paid -- the executive director, the marketing director, the fundraising staff, program director, receptionist, whomever. They report to the board, who may hire or fire them at any time.
