On the first and fifteenth of every month.  You also get free medical, free dental, and a roof over your head.

Are you talking about getting paid to serve? All the military branches get paid to serve. Without pay it would be slavery. People still need to get money for their families also. You don't get paid that well but the higher the rank the better the pay.

You can also get outside income as long as it doesn't interfere with your duties in the service. I know many guys that have side jobs on a part time basis.

Yes, it is a job and you do get paid from day one to boot camp until the day you get out.  You get paid like clockwork on the 1st and 15th of every month.
