Can you get public assistance while i'm seperated?

I have seperated from my husband, i live in a duplex and he lives in the other half. I have also enruled in nursing school, soi have to change my fafsfa, do i need proof that we have seperated? I don't have the money to file a legal seperation. Can someone please help?

  1. No. There is a question on the FAFSA that you can indicate that you are separated and you should include the date of separation as well. Your school may ask that you provide a statement and should work with you if there seems to be any conflicting information.


  2. Since he lives in the same duplex, and you dont have a LEGAL seperation, I would not risk this.

    If you are audited or caught, it is not very likely that the authorities will believe that this is anything more than a way to get additional money since the addresses will be the same or nearly the same for you and your soon to be ex.

    If you still insist on risking this please just contact the legal aid society. YOu can file for the seperation (if he is in agreement) for low costs and then you are protected after your court hearing
