I went vegatrian about 3 weeks ago. I am 13 [not sure if like age matters hah] and I am doing fine without meat but only one problem, my dad said I need protein and I hate beans and that has protein and I don't really drink milk a lot. So can you get sick if you don't eat to much protien. What are some other foods to replace meat for protein? also do vegan burgers have protein. Because I eat those sometimes.

  1. You can also get "sick" if you're not a vegetarian, you just need to do your research and inform your dad that this is the choice for you and that there are plenty of protein options out there for you.  Here are some:

    PROTEIN IN LEGUMES: Garbanzo beans, Kidney beans, Lentils, Lima beans, Navy beans, Soybeans, Split peas

    PROTEIN IN GRAINS: Barley, Brown rice, Buckwheat, Millet, Oatmeal, Rye, Wheat germ, Wheat, hard red, Wild rice

    VEGETABLE PROTEIN: Artichokes, Beets, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Eggplant, Green peas, Green pepper, Kale, Lettuce, Mushrooms, Mustard green, Onions, Potatoes, Spinach, Tomatoes, Turnip greens, Watercress, Yams, Zucchini

    PROTEIN IN FRUITS: Apple, Banana, Cantaloupe, Grape, Grapefruit, Honeydew melon, Orange, Papaya, Peach, Pear, Pineapple, Strawberry, Tangerine, Watermelon

    If you eat a healthy vegetarian diet that is varied enough and you're not just eating, say, pasta and salads all of the time, then you will get enough protein.  Like I said, do your research and then talk to your dad.  It will show him that you are mature enough to make this decision on your own and to take care of yourself.

    Good luck!

  2. tofu has protein, and vegan burgers do have protein

    most people have TOO much protein which is also bad for you

  3. Yes, in an extreme case you can get sick if you don't get enough protein. You'll be tired all the time and your muscles will whither away and you'll get weak and your immune system will become more susceptible to illnesses.  Beans aren't the only source of protein. Potatoes, Broccoli, Rice, Wheat all have protein. Nuts are a great source of protein as well. I think around 40~50 grams of protein is your daily requirement depending on how big you are.

    For a week calculate how much protein you're eating by looking at labels. I don't worry too much about it myself.. For breakfast I had a bagel with peanut butter and a bowl of cereal.. That's about 25 grams of protein right there, half of what I need for the day already!

  4. Your dad is correct! you need proteins for your body.

       Being Vegetarian or non-vegetarian does not have anything to do with getting sick. As you know, all humans can get sick, regardless of their eating meat or not.

       However, in countries/places where traditionally meat is not the main source of proteins, humans have made an alternative to it and consume that in some other form.

        We have never eaten meat and generations and generations are as healthy as any meat eating family.

       Pulses are one of the main sources of Proteins.

       Being vegetarian is proved to be healthy in fact.

       However, please take care to take proper proportions of required diet as your family does seem to derive those from meat.

       All the best!

  5. Eat some tofu.  Vegan burgers usually have protein.  I like the Boca black bean burgers.

  6. Here are protein rich foods so you can stay healthy and not get sick :)

    * Nuts and seeds

    * Soy milk

    * Cheese

    * Yogurt

    * Peanut butter

    * Tofu, lentils

    * Bread and pasta

  7. Yes, you can get sick if you don't have enough protein in your diet, but it's not really the problem that most people think it is for veg*ns.  There is some good information on this page:  http://www.ivu.org/faq/protein.html

    And yes soy and veggie burgers do have a good amount of protein.  Here is a list of some protein sources from different food groups:  http://www.commonsensehealth.com/List_of...

    You can see if you eat meat it is easy to get much more protein than you need.   (By the way, you probably need around 50 grams or less per day.  Here's an easy way to calculate what you need:  http://www.nwhealth.edu/healthyU/eatWell... )

  8. Well, anyone can get sick. You definitely need to make sure you are getting adequate nutrition. As fas as protein you can eat the veggie burgers, tofu, nuts/nut butters, cheese, quinoa, eggs, etc. If you aren't eating a varied and balanced diet, make sure to take a vitamin supplement. As a replacement for milk, try the chocolate Silk soy milk. My family loves it!

  9. You do need protein and you will get sick if you don't eat enough of it.   If you are still eating eggs they have protein, all your dairy,  tofu, seitan tempeh and beans. Some veggie burgers have protein, however most are made out of beans.

  10. Yes you can, and a few foods I recommend are PBJ's, oatmeal, sunflower seeds, walnuts, cheese sticks, pecans (and other), rice, and potato stuff, like baked potato, fried potato, and french fries!   I'm also a younger vegetarian, and here are a few sites that I love!

  12. The protein myth is one of the more pernicious ones out there.  Unless you're not eating enough food, or you're eating mostly junk food, you will almost certainly get enough protein.  Even vegans get more protein than they need!  You only need .3 to .5 grams of protein per pound of body weight.

    Check the nutrition information of the veggie burgers you buy--it will tell you how much protein is in each one.  Tofu, tempeh, and seitan are also good sources of protein.  Quinoa, a South American grain, is another good source of protein.  Nuts and nut butters are also rich in protein, but they're high in fat, so don't go overboard on them.

    I'm not crazy about beans either (it's the mushiness, right?), but I will eat them when mixed with something crunchy (like a crispy taco) or carby (veggie chili fries).

  13. You bet you will.
