Question:

Can you get the smell of Indian food out? We found a nice house that stinks?

We are house hunting and we found the best one. It is in a cul de sac, has a loft, 3 decent sized rooms, a 3 car garage, and it is at a great price. The problem is that Indians (not native americans) lived there before so the house has a fairly strong smell of spices, curry, and a slight hint of body odor.

I am guessing that the smell is embedded in the walls and everything, right? We like the house a lot but the smell is too much. Is there a way to get rid of the smells 100%? Is it cost effective?

  1. I'll be honest, I had to sell a house for an Indian family and I was the third agent that they went to.

I came up to the house, it was beautiful.  I opened the door, and it was even more beautiful inside---but the smell of curry would have knocked you down.

The only way to get rid of it is to replace the carpet and repaint the entire house.  I encouraged them to wash all of their clothes, change all the air filters, sheets on the beds, comforters, everything and to have the upholstery cleaned.

It did the trick...and they promised to cook "American" food as long as their house was on the market.

It sold in a week...after 6 months of trying.

  2. Curry smell is extremely hard to get to go away. it smells like food for the longest time and then turns in to an awfull wierd smelly funk that you just can't put your finger on.

You can try kilzing all of the walls then re-painting them with a smell additive to your final layer of paint (I know sherwin williams sells them) but you would have to replace the carpet as well and seal the floor underneath. Then I would rent and run an o-zone machine. but I would have all of that done before you move in as the ozone machine can be kind of messy.

But if it is the perfect house, then i guess it would be worth all of that work right?

oh and a few more thoughts... the curry powder when cooked often goes through the air, and will build up in the grease on cabinents, on appliances and behind them, and can stain tile, vinyl or wood floors... be sure to check all of those areas to see how badly it has been built up, scrape it with your finger nail. that will give you an indication. and any where that is yellow is from curry.

  3. baking soda works very well with most unwanted ordors

  4. Curry smell is always hard to get raid of.  You can try repainting and re carpeting the floors or putting down hard wood floors. Another thing you can try is hiring professionals to do the job.  I found this web site on Google that had some suggestions.

    good luck with the house
