  1. call 836.7000 from any of the chicagoland area codes for this travel info.  call 312.836.7000 if you are from ouside of chicagoland.

as far as i am aware, griffith doesnt have bus service.  if there is bus service, it might be provide by hammond transit, you might want to call them and ask how far south they can take you.

you could use metra from harvey, go north to some station that both metra and south shore share (i think it is kensington??, ask 836.7000 phone to be sure), then you could go to hammond or gary by south shore trains and then you could use a taxi or have people pick you up, or maybe a bus going south will get you closer to griffith.

no, griffith, IN doesnt have metra nor pace service, as those are state of illinois government corporations, and do not operate outside of Illinois (except for metra to kenosha wi bcs that is where a storage rail yard is at).

northwest indiana is covered by a state of indiana government corp, NICTD, which operates the South Shore Railroad.  They work in conjunction with metra once they get to the illinois state line so as to be able to enter chicago.  But NICTD has only 1 rail line, operating from chicago to hegewich, hammond in, gary, michigan city, and all the way out to south bend indiana.

the trip is doable, but will involve dealing with 2 or even 3 different companies.  but the schedules should work out pretty well, and metra and south shore share a couple of stations where you can make easy transfer from  1 company to the other.
