  1. No, depending on your jurisdiction you might though. My parents put me on their policy when I was 16.

  3. Try using http://My-InsuranceSearch.com to compare rates from all the car insurance providers in your area.

  4. As my kids got old enough to have cars, I kept the cars in my name, insured them in my name (but with the appropriate kinds of insurance for a teenage driver), and then had my kids pay me the cost of the insurance. They were still paying for all the insurance required for the car, but it was less than it would have been if the cars were in their name. Maybe you could work out a similar deal with your parents.

  5. Sure.  You can definitely get insurance in your own name, and it will be very expensive.

If your parents add you onto their policy, make sure that they increase all liability coverage limits to the maximum, even though it will be expensive.  They should also purchase umbrella coverage of at least $1 million above the policy limits.

The likelihood that you will get into an accident (actuarily) is much higher, so your premiums are higher.  If you do get into a bad accident, you don't want your parents to lose everything that they have, because they are on title to the car, and they are also responsible for your actions at least until you reach the age of 18.

If you cannot afford the insurance, you are not yet ready for the responsibility of a car.  For more advice on how to purchase your first and subsequent cars, please see the article below.  If you follow the advice in the article, you will have much nicer cars for less money over your lifetime, and you will also avoid the financial pitfalls that beset many car owners.

I wish you luck.  Drive safely!
