  1. Well Ocean Beach is right in San Francisco.  There's Dillon Beach which is near Marin and about 30 min from Petaluma.  I went there a couple of weeks ago and it was ok, you can have dogs, but no bonfires.  But yes the beaches her in the bay area aren't exactly that fun.  It's usually foggy, cold, and the water is freezing.  Just make sure you bring warm clothes and don't plan on swimming unless you got a wet suit.

  2. Half Moon Bay is a good beach.

However, it is near impossible to find a sunny beach near San Francisco. You would have much better luck in Southern California.

Carmel-by-the-sea is also a great beach.

  3. The beach is not mine to give.

You do know, right, that the water is cold, and this time of year the weather tends toward cool, grey, and windy?

You can't get much nearer to San Francisco than IN San Francisco. How about Ocean Beach?

  4. Ocean Beach and Baker Beach are both in San Francisco.  Like the others have pointed out, unless it is in the upper 80s in the city, the beach is going to be much cooler (cold even) because you'll have a brisk breeze off the ocean and if there is any fog lingering around, it's usually (not always) at the beach and spreading inland.  And when the sun sinks behind the hills, it's gonna get cold at the beach.  Ocean Beach is about as long as San Francisco (north-south) and I think dogs are allowed on the beach (might have to be on leashes and we do have a scoop your dog's p**p law).  The tides can get mean--people have been pulled out to sea because of the riptide.  I don't think they allow bonfires anymore (too many irresponsible people).

The nearest surfing beach is Santa Cruz which is about 30-45 mins south of San Francisco.  If you continue south another 30-45 mins, you'll hit Maverick where they hold the annual surfing championships--but it's bottom is rocky (famous surfer died their after hitting the submerged rocks) so if you aren't an expert, I'd not surf there.  I don't know what the policy is on bonfires.
