  1. An animal sanctuary is a facility where animals are brought to live and be protected for the rest of their lives. Unlike animal shelters, sanctuaries do not seek to place animals with individuals or groups, instead maintaining each animal until his or her natural death. In some cases, an establishment may have characteristics of both a sanctuary and a shelter; for instance, some animals may be in residence temporarily until a good home is found and others may be permanent residents. The mission of sanctuaries is generally to be a safe haven, where the animals receive the best care that is possible for the sanctuary's means. Animals are not bought, sold, or traded, nor are they used for animal testing. The resident animals are given the opportunity to behave as naturally as possible in a protective environment.

What separates a sanctuary from other institutions is the philosophy that the residents come first. In a sanctuary, every action is scrutinized for any trace of human benefit at the expense of nonhuman residents. Sanctuaries act on behalf of the animals, and the caregivers work under the notion that all animals in the sanctuary, human and nonhuman, are of equal importance.

A sanctuary is not open to the public in the sense of a zoo; that is, the public is not allowed unescorted access to any part of the facility. A sanctuary tries not to allow any activity that would place the animals in an unduly stressful situation.

One of the most important missions of sanctuaries, beyond caring for the animals, is educating the public. The ultimate goal of a sanctuary should be to change the way that humans think of, and treat, non-human animals.

There are several national/international organizations that have taken the responsibility of supervising numerous systems of non profit animal sanctuaries in order to provide a general system for sanctuaries to follow. Among them, The American Sanctuary Association monitors and aids in various facilities to care for exotic wildlife. Their accredited facilities conform to high standards and a rigid application processes to ensure that the animals under their care are avidly cared for and maintained

  2. Perhaps you mean to start your own, and are asking "what one needs to start one"?

Or are you asking "why do we need them?"

"Sanctuaries" are needed when something is threatened, and Wildlife certainly is!

Her`s something from "Washington State Fish and Wildlife":

"When we think of wildlife, often we think of creatures such as eagles, otters or elk, creatures we must go see in remote locations. But you don’t have to trek through the wilderness to enjoy wildlife. Whether you live in an urban, suburban or rural setting, whether you live in an apartment or a sprawling mansion, wildlife is as close as your own backyard.

Consider this fact: A typical neighborhood in Washington has more than 25 species of birds and mammals. Hawks, raccoons, and even foxes, frequent some Washington neighborhoods. Robins, squirrels and chickadees are so familiar to us, we hardly think of them as wildlife.

While each backyard is unique, every backyard is a habitat. That makes each of us a habitat manager. As good habitat managers it is our task to strengthen and maintain a healthy living community.

Good environmental stewardship begins in our own backyards.

When we plant trees, shrubs, and flowers around our homes, we are also building homes for a whole community of animals. Even if we plant only a few useful plants, we are improving the habitat for wildlife. Whether your landscape is appropriate for wildlife or you are starting from the ground up, this booklet will help you inventory and evaluate habitat on your property, and how to make your yard suit the needs of wildlife. Whether you spend a weekend, a year, or a lifetime doing it. Your backyard can become a better home for the wildlife already living there and a home for new wild neighbors."

  4. I think the concept is pretty simple. a wildlife sanctuary is a place where animals endangered or not can live without being hunted or tortured. the sanctuaries exist to provide a safe haven for wildlife who might not otherwise survive in the wild. without wild life sanctuaries  many of the animals would become endangered or extinct. i believe a wildlife sanctuary is a great idea and it effectively preserves species of animals, while allowing them to live in a semi natural habitat.

  5. itzzzz fer da people like .. donno vat 2 say... that animals hav a soul 2... n they also hav a right 2 life... so 2 protect them frm us.. sanctuaries r made....

  6. there is no NEED for a wildlife sanctuary anywhere, these are just ways for the government to spend unused money, so it can get replaced when the new budget money is disperssed. People use the excuse that its about preseving or saving endangered spieces, but in reality, that is nature, it is survival of the fittest, from the dawn of time all spieces have either had to adapt or face extinction. With this in mind, Who are we to decide if a spieces is fit to keep in this ever changing world?

  7. Simply!    It is an area -protected for wildlife.   Wildlife habitat is crucial in the preservation of a species -No good place to live...no animal.    We need protected areas - large places for the diversity of species to exist. Many animals roam large areas and need space.   You can also make little sanctuaries on your property - for wildlife. Plant native species and wildlife friendly plants!

  8. OK I'm gona make this short and simple (and detailed). A wild life sanctuary is a place where animals can be protected form the dangerous outside world. They are here to keep certant species alive and away from extinction. We chop down so many trees and take away so many animals homes for our own uses and they don't have any where to live, therefor making the species that you have taken the home away from extincted. With out animals we would all be dead too. Animals help us by eating insects that are harm full to us, eating other animals to keep the animal population in control, pooping to fertilize the earth and so on. If we didn't protect the animals it would just bounce back and harm us. That is why we need animal sanctuary's and what they do to help us! I think I made my point lol.

  9. 1. AWARENESS AND EXPOSURE TO NATURE AND OTHER SPECIES.  A major obstacle to conservation and understanding ecology and the benefits of biodiversity is that most people are far removed from nature and do not have an appreciation.

    2. PROVIDE HABITAT AND LOCATION FOR ENDANGERED, THREATENED, INJURED, MIGRANT SPECIES.  Habitat degradation is the number one cause for species extinction, locally and globally.  Sanctuaries provide some amelioration to this.
