I'll be in London for a day, on a layover, and would love to see some of the city while I'm there. Thanks for your help, in advance.

  1. british museum, soho and hyde park are my favorite places. rest you can find in any tourist map.

  2. *go to convent gardens (street performers and good market)

*go to portabello road (if u go on a saturday-amazing market)

    *go to oxford circus(shopping!)

    *go to camden market

    *buckingham palace

    *leicester square

    *trafalar square

    *hyde park

*any or all museums, tate, national e.t.c

    *wesminster (big ben)

basically the list is endless as its an amazing place, but those r the must see places for tourists, get a tube map it will help a lot! good luck

  3. One day?

It's going to depend on your interests:

is the Diana Memorial Fountain a must or a no-no?

(South side of Hyde Park, near the Serpentine.)

Unless the weather's foul, and possibly even then, I'd recommend a river trip: at least Tower Bridge to Westminster.  That will take you past many of London's essential sights: Tower Bridge, The Tower of London, HMS Belfast, London Bridge, St Pauls Cathedral, The new Globe Theatre, Tate Modern, the London Eye and up to the Houses of Parliament.

(a longer trip out to the Thames Barrier would take a bit longer.  You don't have to take the lunch cruise at the site below.  There are lots of cruise companies working out of the Embankment pier.)

One or more of those you may want to see more of.

Otherwise, have a browse here (URL):  it's less pushy than many of the other London Attraction websites.

  4. I don't have a list but Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum is well worth the long line. Blenheim Palace (Winston Churchill's home) isn't in London I don't believe but it's beautiful as well!

  5. Absolutely, positively DO NOT forget The Tower of London or the London Eye! Also a tour of Westminster Abbey (just a walk across the bridge from the Eye and right next to Big Ben) and maybe a boat ride down the Thames (also starts right at the base of the Eye). You can also walk to Buckingham Palace and take a bus or the tube to a couple of museums- check out which ones may interest you the most as there are museums of every kind- the Imperial War Museum is very interesting as well as the London Transportation Museum, the British Museum and so many others. This should definitely fill a day! We LOVE London!!!!

  6. Take the open top bouble-decker bus tour around London.  If weather permits sit on the open top part.  As far as I know (it's been nearly 30 years since I lived in London) you can hop on and off this bus wherever the fancy takes you, which means, if you see a place that interests you, you can just hop off, go visit that place and jump back on the bus afterwards and continue your journey, repeating the process as often as you like.

If you are only there for one day I wouldn't try the museums - you can spend all day in just one and see nothing of the city itself.  You might even find this is so at the Tower of London, although for me that was a must see.

Madame Tusaud's was a disappointment for me so don't even bother there; too many other places that will most definitely NOT disappoint you.

Grab lunch in a London pub - pub grub over there is usually pretty good and you have to have a pint while you're there :-)

Check out the markets too:  http://www.streetsensation.co.uk/markets... - Portobello Road, Berwick Street, Petticoat Lane, Borough Market are all worth a visit.  Portobello Road market is only open on Saturdays but the shops are open during the week.  Still might be worth a visit.

Even if you are not into shopping these places have an amazing atmosphere that is worth soaking up.  You will see, and possibly meet, some wonderful people in these places.  If you come away empty handed (unlikely as you are bound to spot some kind of bargain that grabs you - but you never know...) you will still feel that you haven't wasted your time.

Hope you have a wonderful time.  London is the best city in the world.  One day will not be enough for you.  I'm sure you will want to visit again.
