Can you give me imput on making a church flyer?

My girlfriend is finally allowing me to help out with doing things for her church. My first task is to create a flyer for an upcoming church event. I don't want to use the boring, usual Word w/ clip art. I want to make it to where its special. I have a laptop with Microsoft XP. Is there any program that I can download or purchase (inexpensive), and is user friendly? Thank you in advance for your help.

My church uses Print Shop pro. I don't really know how it works, but good luck!
