  1. mow neighborhood lawns, walk neighbors' dogs, plant trees. hope these help

  2. Go through the usual volunteer matching web sites and look for organizations that are close enough for you to ride your bike or that you can get to by public transport:

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    HandsOn Network, http://www.handsonnetwork.org/

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

  3. donating rubber dog toys to your local shelter. Collecting towels, blankets, and sheets to donate to the shelter. Collecting dry puppy food and wet dog food to the shelter. Bake home made dog biscuits for the dogs( recipes on line). Make cat toys to attach to the kennels so that the cats and kittens will have some thing to play with.

Have fun with what ever you do!!

  4. Keep it local!  The need for long distance transportation is reduced (ride a bike!) and the results of the service provided can actually be seen by the individual doing it.

--Local parks usually have cleanups or invasive species removals around this time of the year.

--Check with schools, religious org., community groups and neighborhood associations.  Usually groups like these will have pre-planned community service activities and if transportation isn't worked into the plans, there's almost always someone willing to carpool.

    Hope this helps!
