  1. Not only can,but should be.Should be planted in full sun, bloom best in cool weather.Prefer slightly alkaline soil that is well drained.

  2. All Dianthus may be dead-headed without damage.

Annual Dianthus will actually benefit from the attention. ( Let a few stems form seed pods so that you may start fresh new plants next year.)

Perennial Dianthus, or old-fashioned Pinks, are fun to let go to seed for collecting and starting next spring to see what comes of it.

Always allow specialty alpine Dianthus to go to seed for the chance of something special. I used to grow old-fashioned pinks adjacent to the wee alpines with charming dwarf hybrid results.

Sweet William (Dianthus Barbatus), being a biennial, needs to have seed collected and resown if the plant is to continue robustly in the garden.

  3. As the blooms on my dianthus die, I take scissors and snip off all the dead blooms and they bloom and bloom. A plants purpose is to bloom and seed, as long as you cut the blooms off as they die, the plant will continue to bloom. If you allow them to go to seed, the plant will have done it's job and will stop blooming. Hope your plant continues to bloom pretty for you.
