  1. Gosh, what EVER happened to a hand-written letter/note?  Please allow me to quote from Miss Manners:

"Miss Manners is going to have to be very stern with you, in spite of her presumption that you are already feeling burdened, as well as grieved.

"A death is one of the times when human contact among those who care is most important.  No sympathy cards are proper.  No acknowledgment cards are proper.  Letters of condolence should be written by hand, as should all letters of thanks from the bereaved; two sentences will do.  Writing these sentences out by hand does not take a minute more than signing a card, but it  makes the difference between a cold, canned sentiment and a fresh, warm one."

Those two sentences can be as simple as these:

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.  Please accept my condolences to you and your family.

See?  No one can be offended by such well-offered wishes.  The same shop where you buy those "canned" cards offers a selection of very nice personal stationery you can use instead.

    Have a polite day.

  2. Just buy a nice card and inside write something like "I am very sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts (or prayers)."
