  2. Duckweed has a couple of other neat tricks.

It sinks below the ice in winter, often to the bottom in shallow ponds, and does this at about first frost.

It also has a habit of moving from shady areas into sunny areas on ponds and will follow the sunshine. How the plants manage to move around I am not sure, but they will do it even against a light breeze.

  3. There are kinds of aquatic plants are totally submerged ones, floating plants and marsh plants.

    Totally submerged

Their transpiration rate is different from terrestrial plants to help maintain their water balance. They are supported by the water and so go easy on the strengthening tissues. They also lack protective tissue that help land plants prevent water loss.

Their stems contain air filled pockets for bouyancy and serve as storage. Their leaves are highly serrated to get maximum surface area.

    Floating plants

There are two kinds - those rooted to the ground with leaves floating on the surface and those that float without being rooted to the ground.

They have green leaves with chlorophyll and stomata on the upper surface. If water drops on these leaves, the drops roll around and drops off as if on oil paper because there is a coating on these leaves to keep the stomata functional.

  4. 1. Nelumbo species - Lotus - They have leaves that are totally flatten on water surface. The leaf stomata are on the upper epidermis since the lower epidermis of the leaf touches the water surface.

    2. Aldrovanda - Waterwheel plant - It has traps that can capture small animals in water for food. This plant is a carnivorous plant and carnivory aids it to survive in very nutrient-depleted bodies of water.

    3. Lemna - Duckweed plant - It reproduces mainly by vegetative reproduction since the plant dedicates its nutrients not mainly for reproduction via seed because the only source of nutirents in water is very low and its root does not touches the freshwater substratum.
